Greg and I originally planned a trip to California about 2 years ago and it fell through due to the start date at my current hospital I work at. We needed to get away for some quality married time without kids and ended up with a trip to Napa Valley planned for 5 days. We initially flew into San Fransisco, which is about 1 hour from Napa by interstate. We stayed the first day there and then on day 2 took the more scenic route which was recommended by a former native to the area. It started with a drive over the Golden Gate bridge, then up the Pacific Coastal Highway, through the Muir Woods Redwood Forest, to the cliffs of Muir Beach, up the coast to Stentson Beach, which was gorgeous, and ending up in Bodega Bay where we had lunch at Cliff's where we ate oysters plucked out of the bay at the restaurant. We then traveled east a bit and were in Napa. It took 3 hours vs. the 1 hour interstate through the hood of Oakland...but it was SO beautiful and worth it.
Here is a clip of a little of the Pacific Coastal Highway to show you how we drove. We went between 10 mph and 25 mph most of the way only because you couldn't safetly go any faster. This part is pretty dessert like, but this shows why I started getting sea sick after 2 hours of this.
